Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC™) Training Program and Credential

The computer and the telephone have long been invaluable tools in the workplace and in the home. It's not surprising that they have emerged as invaluable tools in the world of counseling as well. As distance methods have grown in popularity, the need for standards of practice and specialized counselor training has also grown. To address these issues, ReadyMinds, the leading provider of Distance Career Counseling and the Center for Credentialing and Education, Inc. (CCE), an affiliate of the NBCC®, is pleased to announce its Distance Credentialed Counselor (DCC) Training Program.

Distance Counseling involves some significant challenges. Even the most seasoned counselors may have concerns about engaging in distance work with their clients. These concerns might include:

  • What are the ethical issues involved in Distance Counseling?
  • How can I build a strong working relationship with my clients via distance?
  • How can I confirm, if I am presently practicing Distance Counseling, that I am following best practices and delivering efficient communications to my clients?
  • What legal issues do I need to be aware of?
  • What technology do I need for effective Distance Counseling?

The ReadyMinds Distance Credentialed Counselor Training Program is designed to address these concerns and help counselors to incorporate distance methods into their current work settings. This two-day, 15-hour training will provide intensive instruction in the use of distance techniques, with specific applications to career, school and clinical counseling specialties. Topics that will be covered include:

  • What Distance Counseling "looks like"
  • Research supporting the effectiveness of Distance Counseling
  • Technology requirements and necessary skills
  • Ethical and legal issues
  • Establishing and maintaining counseling relationships "long-distance"
  • Resolving difficult situations

Requirements to ATTEND the DCC Training Program include:

  1. An earned Masters degree in counseling or related field from a regionally accredited college or university. You DO NOT have to possess advanced computer skills to participate in the training.

Requirements to ATTEND the DCC Training Program and OBTAIN the DCC Credential include:

  1. An earned Masters degree in counseling or related mental health field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Be licensed to practice counseling or a related field in the State or Country in which the candidate resides or works OR be certified in good standing as a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
  3. Successful completion of the two-day 15 hour DCC Training Program and the DCC written Training Accountability Requirement (TAR) document.

Foreign Degree Equivalency Note: Candidates who have completed their degrees from a school outside of the United States must have their degree evaluated by an international transcript evaluation service and submit the results to CCE with the application. CCE accepts evaluation of non-US transcripts completed by World Education Services, Inc, Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc, and American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers' Office of International Education Services.

How to obtain the DCC Credential if you do not meet the requirements mentioned above.

An individual must successfully complete the DCC Training Program and TAR document. You will receive an official letter of recognition indicating successful completion of the DCC Training, and ReadyMinds will keep this information on file for a five-year period. You will have up to five years to obtain NCC certification or a professional license to practice counseling or a related field in the State or Country in which you reside or work. Once you have fulfilled this requirement, you will be eligible to apply for the DCC Credential.
